The UP government has decided to appoint all 75 district panchayat (Zila Panchayat) chairpersons as administrators after their five-year term ends on July 11. The move will allow the elected heads to continue managing district panchayat affairs until the state holds fresh panchayat elections. The decision mirrors the arrangement the government earlier made for gram pradhans after their tenure expired.
Cabinet Clears the Proposal
The state Cabinet approved the proposal at a recent meeting chaired by CM Yogi Adityanath. The Panchayati Raj Department had sent the proposal after considering the delay in panchayat elections and the need to ensure uninterrupted administration. Officials said the arrangement will remain in place until newly elected district panchayat boards take charge.
Elections Likely After Assembly Polls
The terms of district panchayat chairpersons end on July 11, while block chiefs complete their tenure on July 19. The government expects the next three-tier panchayat elections to take place after the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Until then, administrators will oversee routine work and development projects to ensure governance continues without disruption.
Similar Arrangement for Village Heads
Earlier this year, the state government appointed more than 57,000 outgoing gram pradhans as administrators after their terms ended. Officials said the same model now applies to district panchayats to maintain continuity in rural administration. The government may also adopt a similar arrangement for block chiefs after their tenure expires later this month.
