A political storm erupted in Meerut after a video showed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avinash Pandey slapping a detained protester inside a police van during demonstrations over the murder of BA student Lalita Gautam. As the video went viral, the IPS officer defended his actions and claimed that the protest was part of a well-planned attempt to disrupt law and order in the city.
The protest took place outside the Collectorate, where members of several organisations gathered to demand justice for the 20-year-old Dalit student. Protesters blocked roads and surrounded the Collectorate, prompting police to launch a baton charge and detain several people after repeated appeals to clear the route failed.
SSP Explains Viral Slapping Video
Responding to the controversy, SSP Avinash Pandey said he rushed to the police vehicle after officers informed him that detained advocate Ravi Gautam had tried to end his life by hanging himself inside the van. Pandey said he used force to stop him and prevent the situation from escalating. He also warned protesters against blocking public roads, saying no one had the right to disrupt normal life.
Police Allege Larger Conspiracy
The SSP said the protest did not focus on seeking justice for the victim but aimed to create unrest in the city. He alleged that Digvijay Singh Bhati, national president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ambedkar faction), masterminded the agitation. According to police, Bhati already faces several criminal cases.
Police also accused Ravi Gautam of misleading the victim’s family by promising them an arms licence and encouraging them to intensify the protest. Officers claimed that many villagers who joined the demonstration did not even know why they had gathered. They added that the victim’s family had initially expressed satisfaction with the police investigation before outside elements allegedly influenced them.
Eight Arrested, More Under Scanner
Police produced eight accused before a local court, which sent them to judicial custody. They also registered an FIR against 25 unidentified people and have started identifying more suspects through video footage. The cyber cell has begun monitoring social media activity related to the incident, while investigators continue to examine the alleged conspiracy behind the protest. SSP Pandey said authorities would take strict action against anyone found responsible for disturbing peace in Meerut.
