Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has recently sent political signals that have triggered debate across UP. For years, he projected the PDA formula, backward classes, Dalits, and minorities, as the social base of his politics. But his latest public messaging suggests that he may now be testing a wider political line.
In recent days, Akhilesh spoke about listening to pandits and astrologers during a press interaction. He also shared greetings for Bada Mangal on social media along with an image of Lord Hanuman. These may look like small symbolic gestures, but in politics, symbols often carry larger meaning.
The timing has raised questions. His religious messaging comes just as political conversations sharpen around electoral setbacks faced by regional parties such as the Trinamool Congress and the DMK.
Why the Questions Are Growing
The core political question is simple: does Akhilesh now believe that PDA alone may not be enough for the 2027 UP Assembly election?
For a long time, the BJP has accused the SP of selective politics and Muslim appeasement. The BJP’s broader strategy has been to build a larger Hindu social coalition that cuts across caste lines. In that political environment, any visible religious outreach by Akhilesh naturally draws attention.
Critics argue that if this shift was purely about faith, it would not have become so politically visible at this moment. The sequence matters. First came the public religious messaging. Then came the renewed emphasis on cultural symbolism. Now comes his Kolkata visit to meet Mamata Banerjee.
That combination has led many observers to believe that this is not accidental. It looks more like planned action.
BJP Sees Validation of Its Politics
The BJP has used this moment to make a larger political argument. Its leaders say regional parties now understand that identity politics built only around caste arithmetic or minority consolidation has limits.
From the BJP’s perspective, Akhilesh’s recent moves indirectly validate what the party has been saying for years — that openly distancing from Hindu cultural sentiment creates political costs.
This is why BJP leaders have been aggressive in their response. They are trying to frame Akhilesh’s new tone not as conviction, but as political compulsion.
The Kolkata Visit Adds Another Layer
Akhilesh Yadav’s planned meeting with Mamata Banerjee adds another political angle. Mamata herself has often been accused by opponents of shifting toward soft-Hindutva symbolism when electoral pressure rises.
Because of that, Akhilesh’s Kolkata visit is being read not just as opposition unity, but also as part of a wider attempt among regional parties to adjust their political messaging.
Strategy Shift or Symbolic Politics?
The Samajwadi Party insists there is nothing new here. Its leaders say greeting people on festivals reflects social respect, not ideological change.
But politics rarely operates only through formal statements but optics matter and timing matters even more.
Right now, Akhilesh Yadav appears to be walking a careful line. He wants to hold together the PDA coalition while also reaching voters beyond it. However, people know the real nature of him and his party, which is clearly an anti-Hindu party since its inception.
