UP Power Consumers Get Major Relief as Regulator Rejects 10% Fuel Surcharge

The regulator also directed UPPCL to submit its response within seven days. During the preliminary hearing, the commission questioned the legality of the surcharge and indicated that the decision appeared to violate established regulations.

Millions of electricity consumers in UP have received major relief after the State Electricity Regulatory Commission raised serious objections to the 10% fuel surcharge imposed by the power corporation. The commission said that the surcharge does not comply with existing rules and described the recovery of the additional charge as unlawful.

The development came after the Consumer Council filed a public interest proposal against the decision. The council said that the surcharge has put an unfair burden on consumers who already faced rising electricity costs during the summer season.

Power Corporation Asked to Explain Decision

Earlier this week, the Electricity Regulatory Commission sought a detailed explanation from the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL). The commission asked the corporation to clarify the basis on which it imposed the additional charge on consumers.

The regulator also directed UPPCL to submit its response within seven days. During the preliminary hearing, the commission questioned the legality of the surcharge and indicated that the decision appeared to violate established regulations.

Officials said the commission wanted to know why consumers should bear an extra financial burden without a clear and legal justification.

Relief Amid Rising Summer Bills

The decision comes at a time when electricity usage has increased due to the intense heat in UP. People is facing higher electricity bills, and fuel charges have also added to that pressure. This created a real problem for middle-class families.

For families struggling to manage monthly expenses, the issue became a matter of daily concern. In several towns and cities, residents closely monitored their electricity bills and worried about the unexpected increase. The commission’s intervention has now given consumers hope that they may no longer have to pay the disputed surcharge.

UPPCL Likely to Withdraw the Surcharge

The commission’s observations have made it clear that UPPCL will have to reconsider its decision. Consumer rights groups welcomed the development and called it a victory for electricity users across the state.

If the surcharge is withdrawn, it will provide powerful relief to millions of consumers and reinforce the importance of regulatory oversight in protecting public interests.
