On Monday (May 1), Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath strongly reacted to recent demands from some Muslim religious leaders to declare the cow as India’s national animal. Speaking at a public event in Bijnor, he said the cow holds a much higher place in Hindu tradition and faith.
Yogi said Hindus do not see the cow as just an animal. He called the cow a mother and said such a relationship does not need any official government declaration. According to him, faith and cultural values define this bond, not legal status.
Remarks Come Amid Growing Debate
The CM made these comments while speaking at a gathering in Bijnor district. In recent weeks, some Muslim organisations and clerics had supported the idea of giving the cow the status of a national animal. They said that such a move could help reduce tensions and prevent disputes related to cow slaughter.
Responding to these demands, Yogi questioned the thinking of those who view the cow only as an animal. He said people should understand the emotional and religious importance of the cow in Indian culture.
Focus on Law and Order
During his speech, Yogi also spoke about law and order in UP. He said the state has seen major improvements over the past few years. According to him, religious festivals now take place peacefully and without major disturbances.
He pointed to events such as Shivratri, Kanwar Yatra and Krishna Janmashtami. He said these celebrations used to face tensions and security concerns in the past, but authorities now manage them in a better way.
CM Yogi also said that his government stands with law-abiding citizens. He warned that authorities would not tolerate anyone who tries to create unrest or break the law.
Message on Social Harmony
Yogi also asked people to act responsibly and maintain social harmony. He said everyone should respect the law and avoid actions that could create tension between communities.
Referring to the Bakrid festival, he said religious practices should remain within legal limits. He also criticised people who share provocative messages or images related to cows on social media.
The Chief Minister said society should remain united and alert against people who try to create division. He also said that protecting social peace remains a priority for the state government.
Land Rights Distributed to Displaced Families
Apart from his remarks, Yogi distributed land ownership certificates to Hindu families displaced from Pakistan and to several former soldiers and leaseholders during the Bijnor event. He said the government remains committed to helping displaced hindu families and ensuring their rights.
