Uttar Pradesh Farmers Embrace New Technology, See Higher Income and Better Opportunities in Yogi Government

In Devpokhar village of Uttar Pradesh, farmers are witnessing major changes in the way they grow crops. This harvest season feels different because many farmers are using new farming techniques and digital tools that help them increase production while reducing costs.

The changes come through the World Bank Group’s AgriConnect initiative and the UP-AGREES project. These programs aim to improve farming, create jobs, and connect farmers with better markets and services.

Farmers say the benefits have already started showing in their fields. Higher yields, lower expenses, and better access to information are helping them improve their livelihoods.

Direct Seeded Rice Changes Farming Practices

One of the biggest innovations introduced under the project is Direct Seeded Rice (DSR). In this method, farmers sow rice seeds directly in the field instead of first growing seedlings in nurseries and then transplanting them.

The new technique saves time, labor, and water. It also reduces farming costs and helps protect the environment.

Farmer Surja Devi has seen remarkable results after adopting the method. She says her paddy production increased significantly and reached around nine tonnes per hectare. Encouraged by the results, she now plans to use the technique across her entire farm in the next season.

Another farmer, Sukhari Prasad, says DSR has reduced his cultivation expenses by nearly ₹10,000 per hectare. He adds that the method requires less water and allows farmers to manage their fields more efficiently.

Digital Support Reaches Farmers

Technology plays a key role in the transformation taking place in Uttar Pradesh’s agriculture sector. A digital platform called UP-AGRIVERSE supports farmers by providing information related to markets, weather conditions, farming practices, and financial services.

The platform works even on basic smartphones and in areas with limited internet connectivity. It uses artificial intelligence to provide useful guidance to farmers in a simple and accessible manner.

Officials say the goal is to build a digital agriculture ecosystem that can support all types of farmers, including small landholders, livestock owners, and fish farmers. Through timely information, farmers can make better decisions and improve productivity.

The platform also helps reduce crop residue burning by offering advice on straw management and sustainable farming practices.

Expansion Plans Could Create Thousands of Jobs

The success of Direct Seeded Rice has encouraged authorities to expand the model across a much larger area. In the coming years, the project aims to cover around 200,000 hectares initially, with a long-term target of reaching nearly 2 million hectares.

Experts believe that large-scale adoption could improve farm incomes and strengthen rural economies. As production increases, demand for storage facilities, transportation services, packaging units, and quality testing centers will also grow.

This expansion could create employment opportunities for machinery operators, warehouse workers, logistics staff, distributors, and digital service providers. The benefits would extend far beyond farming fields and support many rural businesses.

Environmental gains are another major advantage. The new method can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while conserving valuable water resources.

Private Investment Supports Rural Growth

Private companies are also joining efforts to modernise agriculture in Uttar Pradesh. Investors are helping farmers gain access to better seeds, advanced machinery, and improved market connections.

A major investment has also entered the state’s aquaculture sector. Dubai-based company Aqua Bridge plans to invest heavily in fish and shrimp farming. The company intends to introduce advanced technologies, including AI-powered drones, to improve productivity and efficiency.

Fish farmer Kailash Narayan Singh believes these developments will open new opportunities for local producers. He says many farmers currently sell their fish in nearby markets with limited profits, but future access to larger domestic and international markets could significantly increase earnings.

A New Chapter for Rural UP

The transformation taking place in UP highlights how technology, investment, and government support can work together to improve rural lives. Farmers now have better tools, better information, and stronger market connections.

As these initiatives expand, they could create more jobs, raise incomes, and make agriculture more sustainable. For many villages across the state, the changes represent not just improved farming practices but a new path toward economic growth and prosperity.
