Analysis: Is Avimukteshwaranand’s Cow Protection Campaign More Political Than Religious?

He has openly appealed to voters to cast their votes in 2027 on the issue of cow protection rather than on traditional electoral issues such as development. He has also acknowledged that his campaign and public outreach are linked to the upcoming elections.

Recent statements by Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati have put questions about whether his ongoing cow protection campaign is driven solely by religious concerns or whether it has a larger political objective ahead of the 2027 UP Assembly elections.

He has openly appealed to voters to cast their votes in 2027 on the issue of cow protection rather than on traditional electoral issues such as development. He has also acknowledged that his campaign and public outreach are linked to the upcoming elections. According to his own statements, the objective is to create public awareness and influence political decision-making on cow protection. It means Avimukteshwaranand Maharaj is directly asking people to vote against the BJP and the CM Yogi government.

People say that this effectively transforms a religious movement into a political pressure campaign. They point out that UP is governed by a BJP government led by CM Yogi Adityanath, a leader who has consistently worked for the betterment of the people and has revived the Hindu culture and tradition in UP. The CM Yogi government has worked day and night for the betterment of Hindus, yet Avimukteshwaranand ji Maharaj constantly criticised him for being anti-Hindu and anti-Cow welfare policies. Avimukteshwaranand has repeatedly intensified his criticism of the Yogi government.

Less Religious More Political

People also believe that the campaign’s timing is important. With the 2027 Assembly election approaching, Avimukteshwaranand Maharaj wants to mobilise voters around religion to dent the BJP and CM Yogi. It is just to create dissatisfaction among sections of the party’s core support base. In that sense, the campaign is all about putting the BJP on the defensive on an issue that has long been one of its strongest political leaverage.

Opponents of Avimukteshwaranand Maharaj contend that by linking voting behaviour directly to cow protection and repeatedly targeting the state government, the movement appears increasingly political in nature.

Whether the campaign ultimately emerges as a religious awakening or a political challenge to the BJP and CM Yogi Adityanath will become clearer as UP moves closer to the 2027 elections.
