The government is planning to extend both terms by another six months. Officials are also keeping the option open to appoint administrators if needed. This arrangement will help ensure that administrative work continues smoothly until the election process is completed.

The possibility of Uttar Pradesh’s three-tier panchayat elections being held after the 2027 Assembly elections has become stronger. On Monday (May 25), the Yogi government extended the tenure of village heads (gram pradhans) by six months. Following this move, the government is now preparing to extend the terms of district panchayat chairpersons and block pramukhs as well.

According to sources, the government may soon issue an official notification regarding the extension. Authorities are considering a six-month extension for both district panchayat presidents and block chiefs.

Terms Ending in July 2026

As per current schedules, the tenure of district panchayat chairpersons will end on July 11, 2026, while the term of block pramukhs will conclude on July 19, 2026.

The government is planning to extend both terms by another six months. Officials are also keeping the option open to appoint administrators if needed. This arrangement will help ensure that administrative work continues smoothly until the election process is completed.

Government Wants Development Work to Continue

After extending the tenure of village heads, the government is now preparing to implement a similar arrangement at district and block levels. Officials believe this decision will prevent disruption in development work and maintain administrative continuity.

The process related to panchayat elections in UP is still incomplete. In such a situation, the government wants to continue development projects through temporary administrative arrangements.

A senior state government official said the decision to extend the tenure is aimed at ensuring that development work continues without interruption.

Panchayat Elections May Be Held After 2027 Polls

Following the government’s recent decisions, political circles believe that panchayat elections in UP may now take place only after the 2027 Assembly elections.

Discussions are currently underway at the administrative level regarding election preparations and the future framework for local bodies in the state.
