Under the leadership of CM Yogi, government schools in Uttar Pradesh have entered a new phase of development. The state government has not only expanded school infrastructure but also improved the quality of education and modernfacilities. Through the Basic Education Department’s Operation Kayakalp and the Secondary Education Department’s Project Alankar, government schools now offer facilities that match many private institutions. Smart classrooms, modern laboratories, upgraded libraries and digital learning tools now support quality education across the state.
Operation Kayakalp Pushes Basic Facilities from 36% to 96.30%
Operation Kayakalp has brought major changes to primary and upper primary schools. The government has upgraded around 1.32 lakh council-run schools across UP. Basic infrastructure coverage has increased from 36% in 2017-18 to more than 96.30% today.
The government is also providing 3.42 lakh desks and benches to improve classroom seating. More than 1.30 lakh schools now have well-equipped libraries, while thousands of schools have started smart classrooms. To improve learning outcomes, the government has trained over 4.50 lakh teachers in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN). The training helps teachers strengthen children’s reading, writing and mathematics skills.
Project Alankar Brings High-Tech Learning to Secondary Schools
Project Alankar aims to prepare students from Classes 9 to 12 for future opportunities through better infrastructure and digital learning. Uttar Pradesh has 29,216 secondary schools, and the government has modernised 2,460 government high schools and intermediate colleges under the project.
The government has completed the construction of 41 new government intermediate colleges and 215 new government high schools in a short period. It has also set up 778 ICT laboratories and 1,236 smart classrooms to promote technology-based education. In addition, renovation work has improved buildings and laboratories in 2,383 government and 590 aided secondary schools.
Model Schools and PM SHRI Schools Shape the Future
The state government has launched several new initiatives to provide world-class education.
Under the CM Model Composite School scheme, the government plans to establish 150 modern model schools across all 75 districts. Authorities have already identified land for 141 schools. The government is also developing 75 CM Abhyudaya Composite Schools.
To strengthen girls’ education, the government is upgrading 746 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in phases. These schools will gradually offer education from Class 6 to Class 12.
The state has also developed 1,722 PM SHRI Schools, including 1,565 basic schools and 157 secondary schools, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These schools focus on skill development, innovation and modern teaching methods.

Goal Is Quality Education for Every Child
Director General of School Education Monica Rani said the department wants to do much more than improve school buildings. She said the goal is to provide every child with a modern learning environment that builds confidence and supports better learning.
According to her, Operation Kayakalp and Project Alankar have changed the image of government schools in UP. With trained teachers, digital technology and improved infrastructure, government schools now provide students with better opportunities to succeed in life.
