A major political development is set to unfold in Uttar Pradesh. Well-known poet Shayan Masood, the son-in-law of Congress MP Imran Masood, is likely to join the Samajwadi Party (SP) soon. While leaders switching parties is common, this move has spread discussion because of Shayan’s political background and his close family ties with a senior Congress leader.
Shayan Masood comes from a prominent political family. He is the grandson of late Union minister Rashid Masood. He is also the son-in-law of Saharanpur Congress MP Imran Masood. His decision has drawn attention because Imran Masood has repeatedly criticised the Samajwadi Party in recent months despite the Congress-SP alliance under the INDI bloc.
Imran Masood’s Remarks Against SP Add to Speculation
Imran Masood has often avoided giving credit to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav for the INDI alliance’s strong performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Political observers point out that Imran Masood won the Saharanpur Lok Sabha seat while contesting as the alliance candidate. Before that, he had failed to win the seat in previous elections.
Shayan’s move has now triggered political discussions, with many questioning the contrasting political positions within the same family.
Shayan Says INDI Alliance Remains Strong
Speaking about his decision, Shayan Masood said the INDI alliance remains strong and that both Congress and SP are fighting the BJP. He said it should not matter whether someone is in one party or the other because the larger political goal remains the same.
Without naming Imran Masood directly, Shayan said the family’s senior leader should have ensured unity within the family after becoming an MP. He added that public statements made by leaders from both Congress and SP created unnecessary differences. According to him, leaders should avoid internal disputes when the real political fight is against the BJP.
Says Credit for Lok Sabha Efforts Never Came
Shayan also said questions could arise for Imran Masood if he speaks about strengthening the INDI alliance while political differences continue within his own family. He claimed that he worked hard during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign for his father-in-law but never received recognition for his efforts. He said that left him feeling disappointed.
He also said no member of his family would contest elections, though every political worker naturally hopes to enter electoral politics someday.
Keeps Assembly Election Option Open
When asked about contesting the upcoming UP Assembly elections, Shayan Masood praised SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. He described him as a large-hearted leader who stands by those he befriends. Shayan said getting a ticket depends on destiny, and the final decision rests with the party leadership.
