Gorakhpur, the cultural and spiritual heart of Purvanchal, is rapidly emerging as one of Uttar Pradesh’s leading development hubs while preserving its rich heritage. With a history of nearly 2,600 years, the city was once known as the Koliya Republic and Ramgram, where Lord Buddha spread the message of peace. Today, Gorakhpur combines its historical legacy with modern infrastructure, strong law and order, improved healthcare, and industrial growth to become a key model in Uttar Pradesh’s development journey.
Spiritual and Literary Heritage Gives Gorakhpur Global Recognition
Gorakhpur has long served as a centre of religion, literature, and education. The city is home to the Gorakhnath Temple, the main seat of the Nath tradition. It also houses the famous Gita Press, which began operations in 1923 from a small rented building. Since then, the institution has published more than 1.04 billion books in over 15 languages and distributed more than 175 million copies of its monthly magazine Kalyan.
The city also shares a strong literary connection with Munshi Premchand and Firaq Gorakhpuri. The historic Chauri Chaura movement and the annual Khichdi Mela during Makar Sankranti continue to strengthen Gorakhpur’s cultural identity.
Ramgarh Tal Becomes Purvanchal’s Tourist Attraction
Ramgarh Tal, once known for neglect and poor maintenance, has undergone a major transformation. Authorities developed the entire lakefront under a planned urban renewal project and built a ring road around the lake. Today, visitors enjoy attractions such as the Lake Queen Cruise, North India’s first floating restaurant, boating facilities, and water sports.
The lake has become one of the biggest tourist destinations in eastern Uttar Pradesh and attracts visitors from Nepal and neighbouring states.
Fertiliser Plant Revival and GIDA Drive Industrial Growth
Gorakhpur’s industrial sector has witnessed major growth after the revival of the fertiliser plant that remained closed since 1990. The plant now produces nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of neem-coated urea every day and meets the fertiliser needs of farmers across the region.
The Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) has also expanded rapidly since 2017. Investments worth around ₹20,000 crore have created more than 50,000 jobs. The area now hosts a Plastic Park, IT Park, Logistics Park, and Garment Park, making Gorakhpur an attractive destination for industries.
Better Connectivity and Strong Law and Order Improve Business Climate
Improved connectivity has played a key role in Gorakhpur’s growth. The 91-km Gorakhpur Link Expressway connects the city with the Purvanchal Expressway and offers faster access to Lucknow and Delhi. Expansion of flight services at Mahayogi Gorakhnath Airport and new flyovers across the city have eased traffic movement.
International hotel chains such as Radisson, Marriott, and Ramada have also entered the city, reflecting its growing economic importance. The government says strict policing and stronger law and order have improved public safety and created a better environment for businesses.
Healthcare and Education Expand Rapidly
Gorakhpur has become a major healthcare centre for eastern Uttar Pradesh, parts of Bihar, and neighbouring Nepal. AIIMS Gorakhpur has reduced the need for patients to travel to Delhi or Lucknow for advanced treatment.
The Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University has strengthened traditional medicine education by affiliating more than 100 AYUSH colleges. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University and Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology continue to strengthen the city’s higher education ecosystem.
ODOP Boosts Terracotta Artisans and Rural Economy
The city’s traditional terracotta handicraft has gained national and international recognition under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. After receiving the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, artisans received electric pottery wheels, modern equipment, and financial support. These initiatives have helped improve production and increase incomes.
At the same time, thousands of women associated with self-help groups under the National Rural Livelihood Mission have expanded dairy farming, mushroom cultivation, and food processing businesses. Better housing, uninterrupted electricity, and wider access to welfare schemes have further improved the quality of life.
With its blend of cultural heritage, modern infrastructure, industrial investment, and social development, Gorakhpur continues to strengthen its position as one of Uttar Pradesh’s fastest-growing cities and an important contributor to the vision of a developed India by 2047.
