The Agra police and district administration have started a major operation to remove and shift a controversial mazar located in the middle of MG Road near Agra College. Residents and commuters had raised concerns about traffic congestion and the risk of accidents for several years due to the structure’s location.
After several rounds of discussions between the administration and concerned parties, officials reached a consensus on the issue. Authorities have now begun shifting the mazar under heavy police deployment and strict security arrangements. As a precautionary measure, officials have closed the affected stretch of MG Road during the operation.
Hindu Leader Had Moved Court Seeking Demolition
The mazar remained at the center of a long-running legal dispute. Hindu leader Kunwar Ajay Tomar filed a civil suit through his advocate before the Court of the Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division), seeking the demolition of two mazars. He alleged that the structures stood on government land.
Before approaching the court, Tomar had sent a notice under Section 80 of the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) on January 19, 2026, demanding action from the authorities. When officials failed to respond within the prescribed period, he filed the case in court.
Court Issued Summons to Senior Officials
The court of Judge Shwetsha Chandra accepted the suit and issued summons to the Agra District Magistrate, the Municipal Commissioner, and the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD).
Although the matter remains pending in court, the administration has now initiated the shifting process following mutual agreement among the stakeholders.
Tomar Calls Action a Major Victory
Kunwar Ajay Tomar, State President of Yogi Youth Brigade and a litigant in the Taj Mahal–Tejo Mahalaya case, had continued to pursue the matter. He said he had sent notices to the Municipal Corporation Commissioner, the PWD Chief Engineer, and the District Magistrate on January 19, 2026, but officials neither acted nor responded. He later filed the civil suit on April 10, 2026. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for July 21, but the administration acted before that date.
Tomar said the issue had also reached Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, who directed officials to take action. He thanked the administration and described the development as a significant victory. According to him, the move will provide relief to Agra residents by reducing traffic jams and improving movement on the busy road.
Demand for Action Against Nearby Dargah
Tomar said his campaign would not stop with the removal of the MG Road mazar. He claimed that a nearby dargah located close to Nagari Pracharini also occupies land illegally and that authorities should take action against it as well.
He added that both the MG Road mazar and the dargah form part of the case currently pending before the court.
Notices Sent Over 27 Religious Structures
Tomar has also issued another notice under Section 80 CPC seeking action against 27 mosques, mazars, and dargahs in Agra. He sent the notice to the Municipal Corporation Commissioner, the PWD Chief Engineer, the District Magistrate, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Cantonment Board.
The administration has not yet announced any decision regarding those structures.
