On early Wednesday (May 13), Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s younger stepbrother, Prateek Yadav, passed away. He was 38 years old.
According to reports, Aparna Yadav’s brother Aman Singh Bisht rushed him to Lucknow Civil Hospital around 6 AM. Doctors examined him and declared him dead on arrival.
Chief Medical Superintendent Dr D.C. Pandey said Prateek had no pulse when he reached the hospital. His heart had also stopped functioning.
Akjilesh Yadav expressed condolences on X but did not mention him as his brother.
Postmortem Conducted at KGMU
Doctors conducted the postmortem at King George’s Medical University (KGMU). Authorities later sent the body to his residence.
Prateek’s wife, Aparna Yadav, was in Assam when the incident happened. She immediately left for Lucknow after receiving the news.
Leaders from both the Samajwadi Party and the BJP expressed grief over his death.
Reports of Serious Illness
Sources said doctors admitted Prateek Yadav to a private hospital in Lucknow on April 30 after his health deteriorated. Doctors reportedly diagnosed him with pulmonary embolism, a serious condition in which a blood clot blocks arteries in the lungs and disrupts blood circulation.
After three days of treatment, his condition reportedly improved slightly. However, sources claimed he returned home without a formal discharge from the hospital.
Some reports also mentioned that he had been dealing with depression and nerve-related issues. The family has not issued any official statement on these claims yet.
Akhilesh Yadav Reaches Postmortem House
After hearing the news, Akhilesh Yadav reached the postmortem house and saw his brother’s body. Speaking briefly to the media, he called the incident deeply tragic and said the family would follow legal procedures and medical advice.
A Quiet Life Away From Politics
Prateek Yadav was the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s second wife Sadhana Gupta. Sadhana Gupta had first married Chandra Prakash Gupta in 1986, and Prateek was born in 1987. The couple separated in 1990.
Later, Sadhana Gupta became close to Mulayam Singh Yadav. In 2003, Mulayam publicly accepted her as his wife and acknowledged Prateek as his son.
Despite belonging to one of Uttar Pradesh’s most influential political families, Prateek stayed away from active politics. He largely maintained a private life and ran a fitness and gym business in Lucknow.
