Yogi Government Offers 20% Tariff Discount for EV Charging During Solar Hours, Keeps Power Rates Unchanged for Seventh Year

The government introduced the tariff concession to encourage people to charge electric vehicles during the day, when solar power is available in abundance. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on conventional power and increase the use of clean energy.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a 20% electricity tariff discount for public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations during designated solar hours to promote clean energy and faster EV adoption. The discount will apply from 9 am to 4 pm, when solar power generation remains high.

Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma announced the decision during a press conference on Friday (July 3). He said the move will encourage EV charging during the day, increase the use of affordable solar power, and support the state’s clean energy goals.

20% Discount to Promote EV Adoption and Solar Energy

The government introduced the tariff concession to encourage people to charge electric vehicles during the day, when solar power is available in abundance. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on conventional power and increase the use of clean energy. Sharma said the policy will benefit EV users while supporting environmental protection.

Power Tariffs Remain Unchanged for Seventh Straight Year

The minister said the Yogi government remains committed to providing affordable, quality, and uninterrupted electricity to every consumer. He said that the state has not increased electricity tariffs for the seventh consecutive year. Power rates remain unchanged for all consumer categories, including households, farmers, and commercial users.

He added that UP now offers some of the lowest electricity tariffs in the country while maintaining one of the best power supply systems.

UP Meets Record Electricity Demand of 32,673 MW

Sharma said UP continues to set new milestones in power supply. The state successfully met its highest-ever electricity demand of 32,673 MW, marking a new record and reflecting the government’s efforts to strengthen the electricity network.

Solar Capacity Expands as Thermal Plants Become More Efficient

The minister said UP has significantly increased its power generation capacity. He noted that under previous governments, thermal power generation remained limited to around 5,180 MW. Today, the state generates more electricity from solar power alone than that figure.

The government is developing solar parks with nearly 4,000 MW capacity. Another 2,500 MW capacity is under development under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which will further boost renewable energy production.

At the same time, work continues on thermal power projects in Mirzapur and Meja. The government has also improved the efficiency of existing thermal power plants. Sharma said their plant load factor (PLF) has increased from around 65% to nearly 85%, allowing them to generate more electricity without adding new plants.

Government Eyes Energy Self-Reliance

The energy minister credited PM Modi’s guidance and CM Yogi’s leadership for the state’s progress in the power sector. He said UP is moving steadily towards energy self-reliance and aims to strengthen its position as a national model in electricity generation, power supply, and clean energy adoption.
