The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the guidelines for the Rani Lakshmibai Scooty Yojana, a scheme that aims to encourage higher education and promote women’s independence. CM Yogi chaired the Cabinet meeting that cleared the proposal. Under the scheme, eligible girl students will receive a free petrol scooter along with registration, insurance, an ISI-certified helmet, four litres of petrol, and essential accessories.
Who Can Get a Free Scooty?
The scheme is not open to every student. Only girls who meet the government’s eligibility criteria can receive the benefit.
Applicants must:
- Be permanent residents of UP.
- Have completed their undergraduate degree during the 2025–26 academic session.
- Graduated from a state university, private university, or an affiliated government, aided, or self-financed college in Uttar Pradesh.
Selection Will Be Merit-Based
The government will prepare a merit list of the top 5% of undergraduate graduates. Only students who make this list will qualify for the free scooter. The scheme rewards academic excellence rather than offering scooters to all graduates.
Government Chooses Petrol Scooters
The state government has decided to provide petrol-powered scooters instead of electric ones. Officials said petrol scooters suit rural and remote areas better because fuel stations and service centres are widely available across the state.
Purchase Through GeM Portal
The government will buy all scooters through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. This process aims to ensure transparency, competitive pricing, and quality standards in procurement.
