As Uttar Pradesh politics shifts into election mode, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is preparing to give its campaign a fresh push by bringing national coordinator Akash Anand back to the forefront. BSP chief Mayawati has once again placed her trust in her 31-year-old nephew as the party looks to reconnect with young and first-time voters before the 2027 Assembly elections.
The move comes at a time when issues such as paper leaks, unemployment and education dominate political debates. While the Samajwadi Party, Congress and Chandrashekhar Azad’s party have stepped up outreach among young voters, BSP now hopes Akash Anand can rebuild its support among Gen Z and revive enthusiasm within the organisation.
Akash Anand to Begin Mission 2027 From Hathras
Akash Anand will launch BSP’s Mission 2027 campaign from Hathras on August 10. He will address a public meeting in Sadabad during the announcement of the party’s constituency in-charge. The rally will mark his formal return to large public campaigns in Uttar Pradesh after more than two years.
His second rally is scheduled for August 25 in Jewar, Greater Noida. BSP plans to announce another constituency in-charge there before expanding the campaign to other parts of the state. Party leaders have reportedly requested that Akash Anand personally introduce candidates and constituency heads to energise local workers.
Return After Political Setback
Akash Anand emerged as one of BSP’s most visible campaigners during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. His speeches drew attention across the country, especially among young supporters. However, after his controversial remarks against the BJP and the Uttar Pradesh government during a rally in Sitapur on April 28, 2024, Mayawati removed him from active campaigning and later sidelined him from the party’s public programmes.
Although he returned to the organisation later, he remained limited to internal meetings. His address at BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s death anniversary event in Lucknow in October 2025 marked his gradual return to public life.
BSP Faces Tough Electoral Challenge
The 2027 Assembly election is crucial for BSP, which has struggled to regain political ground in Uttar Pradesh. The party won only one seat in the 2022 Assembly election and failed to open its account in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Its vote share has also declined in recent years, raising concerns about its traditional support base.
People believe Mayawati wants to use Akash Anand’s youth appeal to reconnect with first-time voters while consolidating the party’s core Dalit support. However, BSP also faces growing competition from Chandrashekhar Azad among Dalit youth and from the outreach efforts of the Samajwadi Party and Congress.
Can Akash Anand Revive BSP?
Akash Anand belongs to the same generation that has actively raised issues such as paper leaks, jobs and education. BSP believes his image and speaking style can help the party engage younger voters and bring fresh energy to its campaign.
Whether his return can revive BSP’s electoral fortunes remains uncertain, but the party clearly sees him as a central face in its strategy for the 2027 UP Assembly election.
