On Sunday (May 17), a 20-year-old BSc student allegedly died by suicide in UP’s Firozabad district after a group of Yadav youths reportedly assaulted him and humiliated him by asking about his caste. The incident took place in Nagla Bilotiya village under the Shikohabad area.
According to local reports, the victim, identified as Atin Kumar, belonged to a Scheduled Caste community and studied in a BSc program. On Sunday (May 17), family members found his body hanging inside a room at his house. His death triggered anger among relatives and villagers, who protested for several hours and refused to allow officials to move the body immediately.
Family members claimed that on Saturday (May 16), some youths from Yadav stopped Atin and assaulted him after asking about his caste. They alleged that the humiliation deeply affected him and pushed him into emotional distress. Relatives said he struggled to cope with the incident and later took the extreme step.
Physical Assault in the Library
Police officials recovered a suicide note from the scene. According to reports, Atin mentioned harassment and physical assault at a local library in the note. The contents of the letter strengthened the family’s allegations and increased public outrage in the village.
The tense situation led authorities to deploy a heavy police force to maintain law and order. Villagers gathered in large numbers and demanded strict action against those accused in the case.
Based on a complaint filed by Atin’s father, Ajay Kumar, police registered a case against six people for allegedly abetting suicide. Authorities arrested two accused, identified as library operator Atul Sikera, a resident of Pratappur crossing area, and Dhruv Yadav and Sritik Yadav from Awas Vikas Colony. Police have started a search operation to trace the remaining accused.
The case has drawn attention to concerns about caste-based discrimination and violence, especially among young students in smaller towns and rural areas. Caste-based discrimination is not limited to the upper caste, but almost every caste has its lower caste.
