Uttar Pradesh is becoming an important part of India’s growing defence and aerospace sector as the country pushes for self-reliance in defence production. At the Centre of this transformation is the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), which the Centre announced in the 2018-19 Union Budget. The project aims to boost indigenous defence manufacturing, attract private investment and reduce dependence on imports.
Six strategic cities form the Corridor
The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is developing the corridor across six cities—Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Aligarh, Agra and Chitrakoot. The project aims to build a complete defence ecosystem by supporting manufacturing, research, testing, innovation and skill development.
Major defence companies invest in the project
The corridor has attracted investment proposals worth more than ₹35,000 crore. It hosts major public and private defence companies, including BrahMos Aerospace, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Adani Defence & Aerospace. Many MSMEs working in defence and aerospace have also joined the project.
Each city brings its own industrial strength
Every node plays a different role in the corridor. Lucknow is emerging as a centre for missile and aerospace technologies. Kanpur has become one of the biggest investment destinations because of its strong engineering base. Jhansi will house BDL’s missile manufacturing unit, while Aligarh is expanding work in drones and electronic warfare systems. Agra and Chitrakoot also support the corridor through defence-related manufacturing and industrial development.
Better connectivity supports faster growth
A strong expressway network connects all six cities. The Yamuna, Agra-Lucknow, Bundelkhand and Purvanchal expressways, along with the upcoming Ganga Expressway, allow faster movement of raw materials and finished products. This infrastructure makes Uttar Pradesh an attractive destination for defence manufacturers.
Corridor supports India’s self-reliance Mission
Several projects have already started operations, while many more remain under development. The Defence Industrial Corridor is helping Uttar Pradesh grow into a major defence manufacturing hub. It also supports the Centre’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission by increasing domestic production and reducing India’s dependence on imported defence equipment.
