Bangladesh is in total chaos with widespread anarchy across the nation. Last night’s horror will shake you from your heart. Following the death of youth radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi, Islamists spread violence and anti-India rhetoric in almost all major cities, including Dhaka. He died in Singapore on Thursday, December 18, weeks after he was shot in Dhaka.
Brutal Lynching of a Hindu Youth
In one of the most tragic and inhuman incidents, a Hindu youth was lynched in Mymensingh district on the night of December 18. The victim, identified as Dipu Chandra Das, was a garment factory worker living as a tenant in the area.
According to police and media reports, a mob accused him of blasphemy. He was beaten by the mob, hanged in a tree when he became half unconscious and then set on fire. The videos of the incident circulated across social media, but an emotional human being will fail to watch the horrific scene.
The incident took place in the Dubalia Para area of Square Master Bari in Bhaluka upazila.
Police later recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. No case has been registered so far.
Rising Attacks on Minorities
The killing of Dipu Chandra Das should not be seen as an isolated incident. Since last year’s unrest, reports of attacks on Hindu minorities have increased. Areas such as Rangpur, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong—home to sizable Hindu populations—have reported repeated incidents of violence and intimidation.
Bangladesh had witnessed similar violence in 2021, when several Durga Puja pandals and temples were attacked after allegations of Quran desecration. Later investigations revealed that the provocation was deliberate and aimed at inciting violence against Hindus.
Growing Lawlessness and Islamist Influence
Observers say law and order in Bangladesh is rapidly deteriorating. Islamist groups are increasingly visible on the streets, raising slogans and openly targeting media houses, cultural symbols, minorities, and perceived opponents.
There are also concerns about the presence of foreign handlers and private security contractors operating in the country, though no official confirmation has been issued.
Violent Protests Across Bangladesh
Following news of Hadi’s death, protests broke out in Dhaka and other major cities. Demonstrators linked to newly formed student groups such as Inqilabi Morcha, the National Citizen Party, and supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami took to the streets.
Government buildings, cultural spaces, and media institutions were targeted. The headquarters of two of Bangladesh’s largest media houses—The Daily Star and Prothom Alo—were allegedly vandalised, looted, and set on fire. The visuals were more scrary than the news.
The historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founder, was also attacked, adding to the sense of chaos.
Reports also indicate attacks on cultural institutions, including the Chayanot premises in Dhaka, where musical instruments and artworks were damaged or burned.
Attack on Indian Mission
Amid the unrest, mobs reportedly attempted to attack the Indian diplomatic mission. This has raised serious concerns in New Delhi, given the deteriorating security situation and growing anti-India rhetoric during the protests.
Regional Concerns for India
For India, the situation next door has become a serious security and diplomatic concern. Analysts believe New Delhi may soon be forced to take stronger measures, including summoning Bangladesh’s High Commissioner and reviewing visa and consular operations.
As Bangladesh heads toward elections amid unrest, violence, and political uncertainty, fears are growing that the country could slide further into instability, with serious implications for regional peace and minority safety.
