The winter session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly commenced today. On the first day, the house paid tribute to the late Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Sudhakar Singh. CM Yogi, Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey, and leaders from all parties remembered Singh’s contributions to politics and society and offered their respects. Following the tribute, the assembly proceedings were adjourned until Monday.
Vande Matram Discussion on UP’s foundation day
Addressing the media on the first day, CM Yogi said that the assembly proceedings have officially begun. He highlighted that discussions on the national song, Vande Mataram, will be held on January 24, which also marks Uttar Pradesh’s foundation day. He added that the government has invited opposition parties for discussions and is ready to answer questions on all topics.
However, the session could see disruptions. Opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, are expected to raise issues related to the codeine cough syrup scam and the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists. On the first day, SP member of the Legislative Council Ashutosh Sinha questioned the government on the cough syrup case, stating that thousands of crores were misappropriated and children died after consuming toxic syrup. He demanded strict action against the responsible parties.
To ensure smooth proceedings, a meeting of the all-party and working committees was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana. During the meeting, leaders from all parties assured that the assembly business would be conducted with decorum and in accordance with parliamentary norms. The Speaker urged members to engage in constructive discussions, maintain civility, and give everyone a chance to speak.
CM Yogi also emphasised that discussions will be held on all bills presented during the session. He encouraged members to participate in meaningful debates, stating that elected representatives are the first point of resolution for public issues. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna added that the government is fully prepared to respond seriously to every issue raised in the house.
