UP Panchayat Polls: 644 Block and 15 District Panchayat Wards Reduced Following Urban Area Expansion

The creation and boundary expansion of town panchayats, municipal councils, and municipal corporations have affected 42 districts of the state. Therefore, the Panchayati Raj Department conducted partial delimitation in these districts.

The delimitation process for the state’s three-tier panchayat elections has been completed. Due to the expansion of urban areas, 644 block panchayat wards and 15 district panchayat wards have been abolished. Along with this, 501 gram panchayats and about 1,700 gram panchayat wards have also been reduced.

Partial Delimitation in 42 Districts

The creation and boundary expansion of town panchayats, municipal councils, and municipal corporations have affected 42 districts of the state. Therefore, the Panchayati Raj Department conducted partial delimitation in these districts. According to senior sources, the re-demarcation of gram, block, and district panchayat wards in these areas has been completed, and the state-level data is almost ready.

Panchayat Elections in April–May 2026

The three-tier panchayat elections will be held in April–May 2026. In the 2021 elections, there were 75,844 block panchayat wards, which have now decreased to 75,200. Similarly, the number of district panchayat wards has fallen from 3,030 to 3,015. The number of gram panchayats, earlier 58,195, has now come down to 57,694.

A total of 512 gram panchayats have been dissolved, while 11 new ones have been formed. The tenure of gram, block, and district panchayats will end on May 26, July 19, and July 11, 2026, respectively. Hence, the panchayat elections are scheduled for April–May 2026.

Bulandshahr and 41 other districts are affected—Aligarh, Ambedkarnagar, Amroha, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bahraich, Balrampur, Barabanki, Bareilly, Basti, Bulandshahr, Chitrakoot, Deoria, Etah, Etawah, Farrukhabad, Fatehpur, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Hardoi, Hathras, Jaunpur, Kheri, Kushinagar, Lucknow, Mathura, Mau, Muzaffarnagar, Pratapgarh, Raebareli, Sant Kabir Nagar, Shahjahanpur, Sitapur, Sonbhadra, and Unnao.
