Under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, the UP government has announced a public holiday across the state on October 7, 2025, on the occasion of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti. The government issued the official order on Saturday (October 4). This decision was taken by CM Yogi about a week earlier during an event held in the Shravasti district. He had stated that Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti would be given state-level recognition, and on this day, all government offices, schools, and public institutions would remain closed.

Long-standing demand of the Valmiki community fulfilled

The Indian Valmiki Dharma Samaj had long been demanding the restoration of a government holiday on Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti. The community leaders had submitted an application to the government for this purpose. They said that earlier, this day used to be a government holiday, but it was later removed. Now, from 2025 onwards, this tradition is being revived, which is a matter of pride and honour for the community. Following the announcement by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the administration issued an official order, according to which all government and semi-government institutions, municipal corporations, courts, educational institutions, and offices affiliated with the state government will remain closed on October 7.

Cultural contribution of Maharishi Valmiki

Maharishi Valmiki is considered as the Adikavi (first poet) and is also the author of the Ramayana. His contribution is important not only in religion but also in the cultural sphere. By composing epics like the Ramayana, he conveyed Indian culture and the ideals of Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram to every household. The public holiday declared in his honor holds special significance not only for the Valmiki community but for the entire state. With this decision by the government, it is expected that Maharishi Valmiki’s ideals and teachings will receive broader respect and recognition.
