Namo Bharat Rail and the Meerut Metro project, connecting Delhi-NCR and Meerut, have reached the final stage. It is India’s first experiment where a semi-high-speed train and a metro will run on the same track. PM Narendra Modi is about to inaugurate this unique project soon.
Combined Corridor for Fast Travel
The 82 km corridor has 55 km already operational under Namo Bharat Rail. Now, Meerut Metro will run on 21 km tracks from Meerut South to Modipuram. There are 13 stations on this metro route, including Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmpuri, and Modipuram. Key stations like Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram will serve both Namo Bharat and metro trains. This will offer seamless travel options.
This project started in March 2019 with a budget of Rs 30,274 crore. It promises faster, affordable, and comfortable travel, with reduced traffic congestion and pollution, transforming connectivity in the NCR region.
Modern Design and Facilities
Meerut Metro trains have three coaches. They are smaller than Delhi Metro trains but designed for speeds up to 120 km/h operationally. The design speed is 135 km/h. These aerodynamic trains include cushioned seats, luggage racks, USB charging ports, and Wi-Fi. Moreover, special accommodations for differently-abled passengers like wheelchairs and stretchers are available. Women and elderly passengers have reserved seats and a dedicated women’s coach.
Stations are modern with advanced facilities. Anand Vihar station connects to Delhi Metro’s Blue and Pink lines. It features a 90-meter footbridge and parking for 500 vehicles. Begumpul station in Meerut is underground and 65 feet deep. It is similar to Delhi’s Rajiv Chowk station. The metro runs every 10 minutes, while Namo Bharat trains run every 15 minutes. Fares range from Rs 20 to 150 for standard service. In contrast, for premium service, fares range from Rs 30 to 225. One smart card can be used for Namo Bharat, metro, and DTC buses.
This integrated project will benefit millions. It will save travel time to just 50 minutes between Delhi and Meerut. Additionally, it will ease road traffic and pollution.
