‘Where Did 4 Crore Voters Go?’: CM Yogi’s Claim on SIR Triggers Sharp Political Face-Off in UP

CM Yogi Adityanath’s claim that four crore voters are missing from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) draft rolls has sparked a sharp political face-off in Uttar Pradesh, with the opposition questioning the process and its electoral impact.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has made a major claim regarding the state’s voter list during an address to party workers. He said that nearly four crore voters are missing from the draft electoral rolls prepared during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

According to CM, UP has a population of around 26 crore, and nearly 65% should be eligible voters. By this calculation, the state should have about 16 crore voters. However, the January 2025 electoral roll had 15.44 crore names. Moreover, many youths who will turn 18 by January 1, 2026, should have been added. Instead, the draft list shows only 12 crore voters, indicating a sharp decline.

CM Calls for Booth-Level Action

Following this, CM Yogi urged BJP workers to act swiftly. He said the missing voters are not opponents of the BJP and claimed that 80–90% of them are BJP supporters. Therefore, he asked workers to ensure their names are added back to the voter list.

Speaking at an event in Lucknow, where Chaudhary was officially anointed state BJP chief, Adityanath told party leaders and workers, “Chaar crore ka gap missing hai… Yeh aapka virodhi nahi hai, ismein se 90 per cent aapka matdata hai (There is a gap of four crore missing voters. They are not your opponents, but 90 per cent of them are your voters).”

He instructed workers to obtain copies of the draft list and match them with previous records. Since each booth covers around 200–250 families, verification can be done easily. Importantly, he said only 12 days remain, and all eligible voters must fill the appropriate forms.

He also stressed that elections are won at the booth level, adding that objections should be filed against incorrect deletions and that no eligible voter’s name should be left out, while ineligible names must not be included.

Akhilesh Yadav Hits Back

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp counterattack. Posting on X, he said the Chief Minister himself has admitted that 85–90% of the four crore excluded voters are BJP supporters. According to Akhilesh, this claim actually proves the electoral strength of the PDA bloc (Backward Classes, Dalits, and Minorities).

He argued that this shows BJP’s attempts to manipulate the SIR process did not succeed due to vigilance by PDA workers. Alternatively, he claimed that most voters removed for lack of documents were BJP supporters, suggesting irregularities within the BJP’s own voter base.

Election Math and Political Stakes

Furthermore, Akhilesh Yadav calculated that if 3.40 crore BJP voters are missing across 403 assembly seats, the ruling party would face a serious setback. He claimed this translates to a loss of nearly 84,000 votes per seat, which could push the BJP out of the electoral race.

He also alleged that the Election Commission extended the SIR deadline after noticing the losses faced by the ruling party. However, he asserted that PDA volunteers would now be even more alert to prevent any irregularities.
