After reshaping its party organisation in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now signalling a possible shake-up in the state government as well. While there is no official word yet, political circles in Lucknow and Delhi are abuzz with talk of a cabinet expansion aimed at recalibrating caste and regional equations ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Focus Shifts from Organisation to Government
Earlier, the BJP sent a strong political message by appointing a backward-caste leader, Pankaj Chaudhary, as the new state party president. Now, a similar strategy appears to be under discussion for the Yogi Adityanath government. As a result, sources suggest that the party leadership is actively debating how to counter the opposition’s PDA (Picchda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) narrative within the government structure itself.
However, the timing and final shape of the cabinet expansion remain unclear. Even so, discussions have reportedly intensified after the completion of the party’s organisational elections.
Why the Cabinet Reshuffle Matters
Importantly, the proposed reshuffle is being seen as a long-term political move rather than a routine administrative exercise. With 2027 in sight, the BJP wants to strengthen its social base, especially among Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Dalits. Therefore, there is growing speculation that the representation and stature of ministers from these communities—particularly the Kurmi community—may be increased.
Meanwhile, party insiders say that some senior ministers could be moved to organisational roles based on performance reviews. At the same time, younger and more energetic MLAs may be inducted into the cabinet to refresh the government’s image.
Kurmi Outreach and New Faces
Notably, the Kurmi community has emerged as a key focus area. After signs of political drift in recent elections, the BJP is keen to reassert its hold over this influential group. Consequently, promoting Kurmi leaders within the government is being seen as a corrective step.
In addition, nearly half a dozen new faces are expected to find a place in the council of ministers. Although names are still under wraps, aspirant MLAs have already begun frequent visits to Delhi, indicating serious lobbying.
Bhupendra Chaudhary Likely to Enter Government
Meanwhile, former state BJP president Bhupendra Chaudhary is widely expected to be accommodated in the cabinet. After being relieved of his organisational responsibilities, he is likely to be given a significant portfolio in the Yogi government.
Regional Balance Also on Agenda
Alongside caste equations, regional balance is also under active consideration. According to sources, western Uttar Pradesh, Bundelkhand and central UP could get greater representation. Thus, the expansion may serve multiple political objectives at once.
In conclusion, while the final picture will emerge only after the cabinet expansion, it is clear that the BJP is preparing a carefully crafted political move. If executed as planned, the reshuffle could help the party project its own version of social balance—well before the 2027 battle begins.
