As the bitterly cold month of Paush reaches its end, December 29 is expected to bring the coldest night of the season so far. According to the weather department, night temperatures may drop to around 7 degrees Celsius. At the same time, daytime temperatures are also likely to fall sharply, slipping from 16.5 degrees to nearly 14 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the New Year may begin with rainfall, as light showers are expected on January 1.
On Sunday (December 28), the maximum temperature was recorded at 16.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stood at 9.5 degrees. Notably, the daytime temperature was 2.6 degrees below normal. Furthermore, the seven-day forecast suggests that cold conditions and dense fog will continue till January 3. In between, there is also a possibility of light rain.
During this period, minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius. Similarly, maximum temperatures may stay limited to 14–15 degrees Celsius. As a result, continuous cold days and thick fog during mornings and evenings are likely to disrupt daily life.
Why Is the Temperature Falling?
According to weather experts, several natural factors are driving the sharp drop in temperatures. First, cold north-westerly winds are blowing from the hilly regions toward the plains. Consequently, these winds are rapidly reducing surface warmth. Second, the impact of Western disturbances is playing a key role. Due to this, cloud cover and moisture remain high, which lowers temperatures and leads to fog formation.
In addition, rising moisture levels are adding to the chill. At night, less heat is released from the ground, which makes fog thicker in the early morning hours. Finally, slower wind speeds are worsening the situation. Because the air is not moving much, cold and fog tend to linger for longer durations.
Day-wise Weather Forecast
- December 29: Minimum 7°C, maximum 14°C. Colder conditions with dense morning fog likely.
- December 30: Minimum 9°C, maximum 15°C. Dense fog, reduced visibility.
- December 31: Minimum 10°C, maximum 15°C. Foggy conditions on New Year’s Eve.
- January 1: Minimum 8°C, maximum 14°C. Partly cloudy sky, light rain possible.
- January 2: Minimum 10°C, maximum 15°C. Dense fog returns.
- January 3: Minimum 10°C, maximum 15°C. Cold weather continues with fog.
Impact on Agriculture
According to Dr. R.K. Singh, retired meteorologist from Pantnagar University, dense fog and cold weather are beneficial for wheat, barley, and mustard crops, as they help retain soil moisture. However, farmers growing potatoes, vegetables, and flowers may face the risk of frost. If temperatures drop further, crop damage cannot be ruled out.
