Thirteen people were killed and 24 others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a car near the Red Fort on Monday (Novemeber 10) evening, officials confirmed.
The blast occurred at 6:52 pm inside a Hyundai i20 near the Red Fort Metro Station, instantly turning the vehicle into a fireball and scattering mangled bodies and charred cars across the busy Subhash Marg stretch.
“The explosion happened in a slow-moving car that came to a stop at the Red Fort traffic signal. Occupants were inside the vehicle. Nearby cars have been damaged,” Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told the media.
Delhi has been placed on high alert. The Delhi Fire Services deployed 20 fire tenders, and the entire area was cordoned off. Teams from the Special Cell and Anti-Terror Squad reached the spot shortly after the incident.
Dramatic visuals showed flames leaping from burning vehicles as panic spread among the large crowds in the locality.
The explosion came just hours after the Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered nearly 3,000 kg of explosives from two residential buildings in Faridabad. The seizure included 350 kg of ammonium nitrate, acting on intelligence from arrested J&K-based doctor Adil Rather.

PM Modi Expresses Condolences
“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover soon,” PM Narendra Modi posted on X. He added that he had reviewed the situation with Home Minister Amit Shah and senior officials.
Amit Shah’s Statement
In a video address, Home Minister Amit Shah said the blast occurred around 7 pm at the Red Fort traffic signal, injuring several pedestrians and damaging multiple vehicles. He confirmed that initial reports suggest fatalities.
Shah said teams from the Delhi Crime Branch, Special Branch, NSG, NIA, and FSL were on site within minutes and have launched a comprehensive investigation. All CCTV footage in the vicinity is being examined.
He added that he had spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner and the Special Branch chief, both of whom are at the site. “We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a full investigation, keeping every angle in mind. I will reach the spot shortly and visit the hospital,” Shah stated.
He also said, “We are tackling all angles to the investigation, and in a few hours, we will reveal the reason for the blast. The preliminary investigation is on. We will also have a meeting. The reasons for the blast are hard to tell, but after analysis, we will inform the nation.”
